Form of 1982 25th Reunion Summary

The reunion got off to a reassuring start when Trisha Patterson, John Song, Lou Adreani, Rene Pallace, Greg Lee, Justin Solomon and their families gathered in Tina Abramson’s office early on Friday afternoon to help stuff the welcome bags. The weekend had been a long time coming, but somehow that impromptu gathering epitomized both the essence and promise of the reunion and the team effort that had gone into making the weekend possible. Tina and Greg, as reunion co-chairs, and fellow committee members Trisha, Rene, Justin, Nicole Gallagher, Mariza Scotch, and Alice Coogan endured months of conference calls, emails and detailed follow up to get to this point but all to great effect. The plans were made, the Form was arriving and there was little left to do. Our 25th Reunion was underway.

The weekend kicked off officially on Friday night with dinner at the Rectory, graciously hosted by Bill and Marcia Matthews and attended by several of our faculty friends who had had such a significant influence on our lives such as George and Joanne Carlisle, George and Sally Chase, Rich and Peg Davis, Bill Faulkner, Cliff Gillespie, Rich Lederer, Chip and Lynne Morgan, Brian Murphy, and Sandy and Mary Sistare. As the Form began to gather and the crowd grew larger and more animated it was all too clear what a close knit and spirited Form we had. And if there was any doubt, Bill announced that we had a broken a 25th Anniversary fundraising record by raising more than $1.45 million with over 60% participation, including more than $850,000 for the scholarship fund in memory of Peter Cooley and Jim Kuhn. In addition to recognizing the wonderful generosity of the Form we thanked Gift Committee Co-Chairs Ben Adams and Morgan Rodd, Head Agent Justin Solomon and Committee members Sam Daume, John Donnelly, Mark Eichorn, Porter Gifford, Craig Hoagland, Greg Lee, Donald Miller, Trish Patterson, and Rudy Scarito for all their work on our behalf.

Saturday began with a moving Memorial Service in honor of Peter and Jim in the Old Chapel. We were honored to be joined throughout the weekend by Jim’s wife Heidi, his children Fritz and Vienna and by Peter’s parents Sam and Tryg, his brother John and his wife Aline. Their presence at the service lent extra poignancy to the heartfelt remarks and tributes given by Craig Hoagland for Jim and Chip Morgan for Peter. As Craig said, Peter and Jim should have been there with us but as we sat and sang and reflected together it seemed abundantly clear they were among us still.

By mid-morning Saturday, the Form was at full strength with over 75 Formmates returning – a record reunion turnout for the Form and perhaps for a 25th in general – and our section of the Alumni Parade seemed to stretch the length of Chapel Way with over 200 Formmates and family members in attendance. After lunch on the Chapel Lawn and a well organized Form picture we all dispersed on a muggy but sunny afternoon to walk around campus, swim in the lower school ponds, play in the Alumni games and make our way to the boatdocks. Under the leadership of Lew Lukens and Trisha Patterson, ’82 fielded two boats to meet a challenge from the Form of 2002. Despite many of us not having rowed in 25 years we acquitted ourselves, if not against 2002 at least in the fact that no crabs were caught as SPS ’82 #1 narrowly fought off SPS ’82 #2 who were forced to overcome a two length deficit at the start. (If anyone has a problem with that they can write this summary next time!)

On Saturday night, largely thanks to Greg Lee, we assembled under a tent on the lawn of the Kimball Jenkins estate in Concord. As our children ran around the grounds and worked on art projects under the supervision of a terrific crew organized by Tina (including the Pallace girls and the Solomon boys) we continued to celebrate with Porter’s inspired mix of the late 70’s and early 80s playing in the background. At dinner Rich Rein and Cliff Gillespie spoke emotionally of their fondness for our Form and reminded us yet again of the importance of the friendships and experiences we shared and of the excellence to which they inspired us. And there could have been no more fitting tribute to those sentiments than the transcendent performances which followed. Emily Fisher’s reading of a poem composed specially for the occasion by Heid E. Erdrich; Sally Rousse’s graceful and gorgeous improvised dance; Gusty Thomas’ sharing of her soaring orchestral and choral compositions; and Jeff Rogers and Mariza Scotch together again in perfect harmony had us all transfixed.

On Sunday morning Tina and Ron Abramson hosted the farewell brunch at their home and as we said goodbye one of us noted the strength of community that had prevailed despite 25 years of absence. “I wish this was my community now. Not that I don’t love where I live and the friends that I have now but there is nothing like the bonds that were formed during that that time of our lives when we were all trying to establish our selves”

Or in the words of Heid E. Erdrich:

We tried to think how to say/ the water's color: strong tea or/ dark beers we had not yet learned to love./ We walked the silver dock/ and slid in silent, shocked with cold,/ but determined to plunge/ at least once/ before the waters beyond/ the green lawn and red tower/ rushed us far from one another,/ pushed us long past the black tanic/ ponds that closed around us secretly./ Remember our backs wet with moon?/ All out of bounds, all bound out and away---/ Go to those waters for us all today.

Respectfully submitted,

James D. Houghton

Dear SPS 1982 Formmate,

June and our 25th Reunion is fast approaching and it is time to start making your plans! Below is a quick check list to help you get started. There is more information about all of this below (and on www.sps82.com) but for those who are tired of reading all this mail and prefer the short form, here is what you need to do:

  • Formally register for Reunion by filling out the enclosed reply form and returning it to me with a check in the enclosed envelope by May 1.
  • Make your hotel reservations at the Holiday Inn in Concord (603-224-9534.) Obviously you can stay elsewhere but we do have a special rate and block of rooms for the Form at this convenient location. Be sure to mention that you are with SPS 1982 when you call.
  • Log on to the new and improved www.sps82.com and fill out your face book page. The username, password, and your personal Yearbook Image Number to upload your old yearbook picture were sent to you recently.
  • If you have not already done so, consider making a donation or pledge to our 25th Reunion Fund or to the Peter Cooley and Jim Kuhn Memorial Scholarship Fund
  • Nominate yourself or a formmate to serve as Form Director for 2007-2012 (on the enclosed reply form.)

Reunion Sign-Up

The Reunion begins on Friday June 1 and will run through Sunday June 3. You should have received a general calendar of events from the School, but as a reminder our Form-specific events are as follows:

  • Form of 1982 Dinner at the Rectory on Friday at 6pm
  • Memorial service in honor of Peter Cooley and Jim Kuhn on Saturday at 9am
  • Alumni Parade and Lunch, 11:30am Saturday
  • Form of 1982 family barbeque on the lawn and under the tents at the Kimball Jenkins Estate on Saturday evening at 6pm
  • Brunch at Tina Abramson’s house on Sunday.

We have been working hard at striking the balance between pomp and affordability and are doing our best to keep costs as low as possible. The charge for the entire weekend will be $120/adult and $20/child. This includes childcare on Saturday evening. To attend the reunion, please fill out the attached form and send it back in the enclosed envelope along with a check for the appropriate amount, made out to James Houghton before May 1. Please note that you still need to do this even if you have already indicated that you are thinking about coming.

Also, please note the following:

  • We still have a block of rooms available at the Holiday Inn on Main Street in Concord. While you are under no obligation to stay here, we felt this was the best option given that it has a pool, a restaurant and bar attached, and is within walking distance of our dinner on Saturday night. Call 603-224-9534 now to make your reservations. Please mention that you are with St. Paul’s School, Form of 1982 to ensure that you get the group rate of $159/night plus tax. Reservations must be made before May 11, 2007.
  • If you are planning to attend the adults-only dinner at the Rectory on Friday, June ,1 you should be aware that childcare is available for a fee from 5:30pm - 10pm at the SPS Children’s Learning Center right on campus. The fee is $35/child and if interested please call 603-229-5576 to make your reservation now. (Again, childcare will be provided on Saturday evening and is included in the overall reunion fee.)

Form of 1982 Facebook

We are excited to announce that starting on February 28th you will be able to log into www.sps82.com and create a page on our secure Reunion Face Book. To do this:

  • Go to www.sps82.com
  • Click "Login" on the home page
  • Enter the user name: sps82
  • Enter the password: 82sps
  • Click on "Questionnaire" and start filling out the information requested.
  • Upload your 1982 yearbook picture by using your personal Yearbook Image Number

(found on the first page of this letter) and you will also be able to upload a current photo of yourself and/or family.

Once you have filled out the info, it can be saved and you will then be able to visit the pages of others who have already filled out their information. We will print out a final copy of all the pages before the reunion and distribute them then. Some of us have already filled out our pages and we would love to have as many of you participate as possible. Please take a few minutes to log in and fill out your page.

Form of 1982 Reunion Gift and the Peter Cooley and Jim Kuhn Memorial Scholarship Fund

Thanks to the tremendous generosity of many of you already, I am pleased to announce that we have already raised $900,000 toward our overall Reunion Gift goal of $1.3 million. Approximately $600,000 has been specifically designated to the Scholarship Fund in honor of Jim and Peter, a wonderful tribute to their legacy. This is terrific progress and a real credit to the Form, but we still have a long way to go and we will need all of your support. While it is still relatively early, our overall participation is low relative to our goal of 82% for 82, and we want to make this as broad an effort as possible. Every dollar truly does count and we hope that each of you will consider contributing whatever you can toward the Fund. If you have already given, thank you very much. If you have already been contacted by one of the committee members and are still thinking about your gift, please consider making a commitment soon. If you have not yet been contacted, you should be soon, or feel free to call me or send me an email and I will be happy to help. Further information on the general gift and the Scholarship Fund are available on www.sps82.com.

Form Director Nominations

The time has come to solicit nominations for our new Form Director for the years 2007-2012. The Form Director is our Form’s elected representative to the SPS Alumni Association and is responsible for attending Alumni Association meetings and for voting on Alumni Association matters on the Form’s behalf. In addition, the Director is responsible for overall communication with the Form, for planning the 5-Year Reunion at the end of their term, and for working closely with the Form Agents to help raise funds for the SPS Annual Fund. It is a great way to stay in touch with the school and with the Form and it is a terrific way to help the school ensure that it is listening and responding to its alumni. We are currently soliciting nominations for the Director to be elected later this spring and have included a space to write in your nomination (self-nominations welcome!) on the enclosed reunion reply form. Just to put your minds at ease, I am not eligible to run for consecutive terms.

Thank you for your time and for you attention to all this detail. We are looking forward to seeing everyone in June, so please start making your plans, return your reply form, and start filling out your facebook page now!

All best,

James D. Houghton

Dear Form of 1982,

It is hard to believe but this letter formally kicks off our 25th Reunion Year at SPS. Along with Ben Adams, Greg Lee, and (newly appointed Executive Director of the Alumni Association!) Tina Pickering Abramson, I attended the Volunteer Leadership Weekend at SPS a few weeks ago, and I have to admit that I spent much of the time wandering around the campus—which was in full color and absolutely beautiful—somewhat overwhelmed by the notion that 25 years ago we were just starting our 6th Form fall. While it was tempting to wallow in wistful melancholy, it was actually inspiring to see the School in action and to spend time with some of the students. Just seeing their enthusiasm for the School and for each other made me appreciate even more the sense of community and shared experience that we all have as a result of having grown up together at SPS. It is a great gift and it sure seems worth celebrating every once in a while. Certainly once every 25 years!

While I do want to spend most of the time updating you on some of our early Reunion planning, I also wanted to report quickly on the Volunteer Leadership Weekend. The School was in terrific shape, both physically, as all the flood-damaged buildings except Hargate basement opened as planned for the start of school, and psychically, as the presence of Bill Matthews and the Board of Trustees helped to set a distinctly different (and positive) tone for the weekend. Bill, who is recovering well from his bypass operation this summer, seems in great shape and it is difficult to describe the impact his calming influence has had on the entire community. The Board, who for the first time were holding their fall meetings during the traditionally alumni and parent-focused weekend, organized several open forums and shared a great deal of information on the budget, the endowment, the governance changes (including term limits and more alumni representation on the board) and their strategic initiatives. While one year does not necessarily guarantee a trend, it was encouraging to see the School taking concrete steps towards its stated goals of increased transparency and improved communications.

25th Reunion, June 1-3, 2007

By this time I hope you have marked your calendars, but I did want to give you some highlights on the progress we have been making in the planning for the weekend in hopes that we can encourage even more of you to attend. Many thanks to Reunion Dinner co-Chairs Greg Lee and Tina Pickering Abramson, and committee members Alice Rodd Coogan, Nicole Gallagher, Rene Pallace, Trish Patterson, Mariza Scotch, and Justin Solomon for all their help so far.

The weekend runs from Friday afternoon June 1 to Sunday June 3rd. The basic outline is a dinner at the Rectory on Friday evening; the alumni parade, lunch and boat races on Saturday; an all-family dinner on Saturday; and brunch at the home of Tina Abramson on Sunday.

At this point, we have already received responses indicating that 79 adults and 74 kids are interested in coming back (please see the attached list of potential attendees.) This is fantastic and it would be great to get many more of you to come, so if you have not already done so, log on to www.sps82.com and let us know your plans. This does not commit you to anything at the moment, but it does help us plan the events and set the budget.

We have reserved a block of hotel rooms at the Holiday Inn on Main Street in Concord. We felt this was the best option given that it has a pool, a restaurant and bar attached, and is within walking distance of our dinner on Saturday night. For those of you who want to get an early start, please feel free to call now to make your reservations by calling the hotel directly at 603-224-9534. Please mention that you are with St. Paul’s School, Form of 1982, to ensure that you get the group rate of $159/night plus tax. Reservations must be made before May 11, 2007.

We will be providing more information in January on specific plans and the budget, but at the moment Greg Lee is spearheading arrangements for a great dinner on Saturday at the Kimball Jenkins Estate, an historic estate and art gallery that has great outdoor space and will provide art studio space for kids activities. We are working on ensuring that there is plenty of childcare as well so please think about bringing your children, as we would love to make this an all-family affair.

Nicole Gallagher and Mariza Scotch have graciously agreed to help organize the entertainment portion of the evening and will soon be reaching out for volunteers who would willing to share a song or a poem or a dance to help bring us back to the good old days. Please take their calls or feel free to call them directly if you have an interest in participating.

Finally, Rene Robinson Pallace, our web master extraordinaire, is in the process of working on a before and after Face Book. Please be on the lookout for her requests for your input and also please let us know if you have any interest in helping Rene on this effort.

As always if any of you have any ideas or interest in participating in the planning please let us know. The most important thing of course is just to be there so please log on to the website, tell us that you are coming, and then call the hotel to reserve your rooms today.

Form of 1982 25th Reunion Gift and the Cooley-Kuhn Scholarship Fund

In addition to our party planning efforts, a group of us have been getting organized to begin the process of raising money for our 25th Anniversary Gift to the School. The 25th is obviously an important milestone and traditionally each 25th Reunion Form has made a special effort to raise capital funds for a specific project or initiative at the School. While gifts can be designated (and will be gratefully accepted) for any purpose, this year we have decided to focus our efforts on raising funds for a memorial scholarship fund in honor of our recently deceased classmates Peter Cooley and Jim Kuhn. Fellow co-Chairs Morgan Rodd and Ben Adams and the Reunion Gift Committee have created a brochure explaining the Fund and its purpose and we hope you will read this carefully and consider making a capital donation to this effort. One of us on the Gift Committee will be calling you to discuss this in more detail but as you begin to think about your own interest in making a gift to the School this year here are a few fun facts.

Our overall fundraising goal is $1.3 million and our participation goal is 82% (“82 for 82!”) Both will be records and we are pleased to report that based on some previous capital gifts which counted toward our 25th Gift, and some early and generous donations to the Scholarship Fund, we have already raised over $700,000 in total and more than $375,000 for the Cooley-Kuhn Fund! Many thanks to those who have already given and helped establish such terrific momentum.

Again, there is no requirement to give to the Scholarship Fund. Any gift you make this year will count toward our overall goal of $1.3 million and you can designate your gift wherever you feel most comfortable. We wanted to create the Scholarship Fund as a vehicle both to honor Peter and Jim and to help address one of the critical needs of the School, financial aid.

Any pledge of $2,500 or more made before June 30, 2007 can be paid out over 3-5 years. Given that this is a milestone year and that our gift will be considered a capital gift we hope that you will consider making a stretch gift beyond what you would normally consider for an annual fund gift. (Please also know that unless you specify otherwise, a % of all cash raised this year before June 30 will be allocated to the Annual Fund to ensure that we maintain our commitment to supporting the annual operating expenses of the School.)

82 for 82. Participation is critical! No gift is insignificant. Every dollar will help and will be greatly appreciated. This is a great time to show your support for the Form and for the School. Many thanks again to all the volunteers who have put so much time and effort into our early reunion planning and fundraising efforts. It has been a lot of fun to reconnect with many of you and we look forward to touching base in the months ahead and hopefully seeing you all in June. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

All my very best,

James Houghton

January 24, 2006

Dear Form of 1982,

Greetings and hope that you are all off to a good start in the New Year.

As I wrote to you this fall a small group of us have begun to start thinking about our 25th Reunion over the weekend of June 1-3, 2007. This may seem nuts to be talking about so early but as we have started to brainstorm and put together ideas about dinners and events it has become increasingly clear that one of the most helpful things we can learn is how many people will be attending. Obviously we hope that everyone will come—our class has typically had some of the highest reunion participation and we would love to keep that tradition alive—but we are also conscious of everyone’s busy schedules and are hoping that by giving you an early heads up and a brief overview of what we have planned that it might encourage you to mark the date now and begin thinking about how you might be able to make the time to be there. We would also love to get an early indication of your plans and how many people you might bring with you—kids, spouses, partners, etc. —as this will be invaluable in setting a budget and planning the two days.

The weekend begins officially on Friday evening, June 1, with a dinner at the Rectory for our class. The School will take care of this, and childcare will be available (for a nominal fee) at the SPS Children’s Learning Center. On Saturday, June 2, the day begins with the Alumni Association gathering at Memorial Hall, followed by the Alumni Parade (we will be sure to have appropriate Form of 1982 paraphernalia to wear and/or wave) and lunch on the lawn between the Chapel and the Ohrstrom Library. The afternoon is for the boat races and time to be on campus, and then we will all head to our Form dinner at the Kimball Jenkins Estate (www.kimballjenkins.com ,) an old manor house in Concord that has been used successfully by other reunion classes. Our current thinking is that this will be a casual, full family affair, with a cookout, open bar, activities for kids, and a space set up for entertainment (a Form of 1982 talent show?) and dancing. We have reserved a set of rooms at the Holiday Inn in Concord (www.concordhi.com ) which is less than a mile away from the Kimball Jenkins so hopefully this will minimize transportation concerns. We are responsible for the dinner on Saturday and our goal is to keep the costs for the weekend (excluding hotel and extra childcare needs) to about $100 per adult (kids free).

We are also excited to report that in an effort to help our reunion planning and to facilitate more communication we have recently launched a Form of 1982 website. Rene Robinson Pallace has agreed to be our first web master and has secured the www.sps82.com domain name. This will be a site not only to post information about the Reunion but also to share news with one another and to facilitate gathering information for a class book that we would like to pull together. The site is now up and running with some basic information and we obviously hope to expand the functionality and feel over time. The most important thing you can do to help get us going at this time is to visit the site and confirm that we have your correct email by filling out some basic update information. Once you do this you will be added to our secure Form of 1982 email list and we can begin to communicate much more regularly by email. Please note that your email will be confidential and will not be published anywhere. If you wish to send an email to various formmates or to the class in general you will be able to do so by sending a message to the website and it will be forwarded to the appropriate parties.

Also, please note that if you receive this letter and have not received an introductory email from the website within the next few days it is because we do not have a current email address for you. Please log on to the site as soon as possible to make sure that we know how to contact you.

At this point all I would ask is that you visit the website, confirm that we have your correct email (yes, even if you receive the blast from the site we still need you to confirm so that you can be added to the Form mailing list) and give us an early indication about whether or not you think you might attend the reunion. Alternatively you can send the enclosed reply card to me in Boston. You will not be held to this by any means but the more idea we have about attendance, the better we can plan and hopefully keep the costs down. Also, please feel free to pass on any other thoughts or ideas about the website or the reunion. Many thanks to Greg Lee, Nicole Gallagher, Trish Patterson, Justin Solomon and Rene Pallace for their early involvement on our nascent Reunion Planning Committee, and if any of you would like to help with the planning in a more formal way, please let us know.

Many thanks, all my best to you all and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in June of 2007!
